World No Tobacco Day

That the Parliament marks World No Tobacco Day, which was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and takes place on 31 May 2024; commends health charities, ASH Scotland and Asthma + Lung UK Scotland, for raising awareness in Scotland about the theme for the 2024 campaign of "Protecting children from tobacco industry interference", which is encouraging young people across the world to urge governments and elected representatives to shield them from predatory tobacco industry marketing tactics; understands that the report from the WHO and global tobacco industry watchdog, STOP, Hooking the next generation: how the tobacco industry captures young customers, spotlights how the tobacco and nicotine industry designs products, implements marketing campaigns and works to influence health policy environments to help young people become addicted; expresses concern that recent Health Behaviour in School-aged Children analysis for 2021-22 reportedly found that girls in Scotland and England were more likely to have used an e-cigarette by the age of 15 than the average for all 44 countries across Europe, central Asia and Canada involved in the study, and looks forward to the day when there will be no more opportunities for the advertising and marketing of vapes to be targeted at children and young people to protect current and future generations in Scotland from starting to use addictive and health harming vaping products.
