Aphasia Awareness Month

The motion

That the Parliament recognises Aphasia Awareness Month, which takes place through June 2024; notes that aphasia is a communication difficulty, which it understands affects around one in 3 stroke survivors; acknowledges that people with aphasia can struggle to understand what people are saying and may use the wrong words or put words in the wrong order, slur, or mumble; understands that people living with aphasia often face significant barriers to accessing care, including rehabilitation support such as speech and language therapy; is concerned by findings from the Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland (CHSS) report, No Life Half Lived: 1 in 5 Aphasia, which found that 67% of people surveyed with aphasia encountered difficulty accessing services; commends the work undertaken by CHSS to provide community healthcare support services, which enable people living with aphasia to build confidence and manage their condition, including through affiliated support groups, and urges the Scottish Government to ensure that rehabilitation services such as speech and language therapy are available to all stroke survivors for as long as needed, and that everyone living with aphasia has access to community support to help them live life to the full.
