Congratulating Glasgow's Bangla Centre on its Acquisition of the Balgrayhill Community Centre

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Bangla Centre in Glasgow on its landmark achievement of securing the acquisition of the Balgrayhill Community Centre in Springburn from Glasgow City Council; understands that the Bangla Centre first expressed an interest in a community transfer in 2020 and that it has been determined to secure a base for its activities for several years; welcomes that 10 June 2024 marks the official transfer of the Balgrayhill Community Centre under the People Make Glasgow Communities process; acknowledges the support of both Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government in pursuing the transfer; notes that the Bangla Centre is a charity that was established 16 years ago, which caters for the Bangladeshi community in Glasgow, and considers that it makes an important contribution to Bangladeshi culture and sports; welcomes that the Balgrayhill Community Centre will enable further growth in the range of activities on offer, including drama, dance, choral singing, education, social events, badminton, football, and cricket; believes that the growth in these activities will be of significant benefit to the many families who will use the Centre; commends the efforts of Bangla Centre volunteers for their drive, dedication and commitment over many years; welcomes the commitment of the Bangla Centre to reach out and involve the local community regarding the use of the Centre, and to build engagement with other ethnic groups, and believes that the success of the Bangla Centre will play a positive role in making north Glasgow and the wider city a vibrant, diverse and welcoming place.
