Pride 2024
The motion
That the Parliament recognises June 2024 as Pride Month, an annual celebration that recognises the LGBTQIA+ community and its contributions to society; understands that Pride started as, and still remains, a protest; notes that, in June of 1969, a group of LGBTQ+ people in New York City rioted following a police raid of the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar located on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, which, it understands, was a turning point for the LGBTQ+ community; further notes that the following year, in June 1970, organised demonstrations took place in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco to mark the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots; highlights what it sees as the tremendous strides that the LGBTQIA+ rights movement has made over the past few decades, and believes that much of the progress in visibility is thanks in part to pride parades and marches that have taken place in cities around the world, and the issues of inequality, prejudice and oppression that they have highlighted; celebrates and commends Grampian Pride, run by Four Pillars in Aberdeen, which took place on 25 May 2024, Dundee Pride, run by Dundee City Council, which takes place on 15 June, and other Pride events taking place in the North East Scotland region, as well as those across Scotland and the wider UK, and passes on its best wishes for every success in the future.
