Orkney Victory at Junior Inter-county

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the young Orkney athletes on retaining the Stuart Cup after victory over their Shetland counterparts in the annual junior inter-county competition on 1-2 June 2024; understands that there were a number of fantastic performances by individual athletes across the five sports of athletics, hockey, swimming, football and netball; believes that it was the collective team performance that was crucial for Orkney’s victory under the joint captaincy of Ava Luke and Fraser Burton; acknowledges the fantastic contribution made by the Shetland team, coaches and supporters to another memorable occasion; understands that the young Orkney athletes remained unbeaten across all fixtures over the weekend, a momentous achievement and Orkney’s best performance in years; further understands that only a late Shetland equaliser in the football kept Orkney from a clean sweep of victories; congratulates in particular the Orkney swimmers who beat Shetland 52.5 to 44.5, the first Orkney swimming victory in 27 years; pays tribute to the work done by the Orkney and Shetland junior inter-county associations and all of the volunteers who make this competition possible, and looks forward to many more successful years of sporting rivalry ahead and the forming of lifelong friendships.
