Invaluable Role of Abused Men in Scotland (AMIS)

The motion

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the invaluable work of the charity, Abused Men in Scotland (AMIS), which works to support men who have experienced domestic abuse and coercive and controlling behaviour; understands that AMIS, which was founded in 2010 by men and women concerned about the lack of support for male victims of abuse, works to support men through providing a support line, email advice and through other more intensive interventions to ensure that men are supported throughout the process of reporting abuse to the police and throughout court proceedings; further understands that it also supports men through lobbying all public bodies and government to ensure that the voices of male victims are heard and for improved support services for male victims of domestic abuse and coercive control; understands that Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) statistics show that, between 2022-23, 30,139 charges were reported to the COPFS with a domestic abuse identifier in 2022-23 and that, in these instances, the accused was male in 86% of cases, which demonstrates that women were the perpetrators of domestic abuse in 4,219 cases; further understands that Police Scotland recorded 65,251 instances of domestic abuse over the proceeding period, with 16% of reports involving a male victim; encourages all male victims of domestic abuse to seek the support of AMIS, through its dedicated support line on 03300 949 395 or through its email service, [email protected]; welcomes that the Scottish Government has provided funding to AMIS and shares the view of AMIS that all, regardless of gender, can be the victims of domestic abuse and that all victims should have equitable support; thanks the team at AMIS for all it does to support men across Scotland, and wishes the organisation every success for the future.
