Celebrating the Work of Jo Williamson and the Phaeo and Para Cancer Charity

The motion

That the Parliament recognises Jo Williamson, and the trustees and scientific committee of the Phaeo and Para Cancer Charity for what it sees as their tireless work to raise awareness and funds; acknowledges that Jo set up the charity in 2018 after the loss of his wife, Sue Williamson, to a rare cancer, phaeochromocytoma; understands that, since then, this rare cancer has not only taken the life of his wife, but other family members now live with this cancer or carry the faulty gene that can result in this cancer developing; recognises that the Phaeo and Para Cancer Charity’s purposes include research into a type of rare tumour called a phaeo and para cancer that affects the neck and adrenal gland areas, and the dissemination of the findings into the public domain, with the hope that by bringing together experts in the field, advancements can be made in the treatment of this cancer; further recognises that another purpose of the charity is the education of the public about phaeo and para cancer through public events, media information and blog sites, as well as the organisation of and/or participation in international conferences to discuss phaeo and para cancer; considers that the research undertaken by the Phaeo and Para Cancer Charity may help in the understanding and treatment of other cancers, especially those high in reactive oxygen species; recognises the efforts that the Phaeo and Para Cancer Charity has made to advance research into this rare condition, which, it believes, simply would have not happened without Jo’s drive; applauds that the charity has raised over £130,000 to date, with £100,000 having been spent on research; notes that Jo is a Cancer Research UK campaigns ambassador, supporting the Cancer Research UK legacy campaign, among other awareness raising campaigns, and that, since Sue was diagnosed in 1993, Jo has raised over half a million pounds for cancer charities; acknowledges Jo’s wish to record his grateful thanks to all those who have supported the Phaeo and Para Cancer Charity, along with his other fundraising efforts, and wishes Jo and everyone involved with the Phaeo and Para Cancer Charity every success going forward.
