BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Classical Musician of the Year 2024

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Melia Simonot, winner of BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Classical Musician of the Year competition, which was held in association with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland; notes that Melia Simonot, who plays accordion, was born in the South of France where she began playing the instrument at the age of eight and that she is a student in Glasgow in her final year of an undergraduate degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland; congratulates all the finalists, including harp player Gina Gallacher, pianist Vita Hofinger Mihelic, and oboist Chris Vettraino; recognises that the award is the first ever BBC Radio Scotland Young Classical Musician of the Year title, which follows in the musical footsteps of BBC Radio Scotland’s much-respected Young Traditional Musician of the Year and the more recent introduction of the station’s successful Young Jazz Musician of the Year and the BBC Introducing Scottish Act of the Year competitions, and wishes those involved every success.
