The Benefits of Intergenerational Learning

The motion

That the Parliament recognises what it sees as the value of intergenerational learning in building inclusive, harmonious communities and facilitating meaningful, mutually beneficial relationships between older and younger people; believes that intergenerational learning is an important part of lifelong learning in which people of all ages learn together and from each other, sharing skills, values and knowledge; notes that intergenerational learning may include, for example, members of different generations coming together for workshops, cultural festivals, or hobby groups, such as gardening projects and choirs; acknowledges what it sees as the potential of intergenerational learning in building confidence, empathy and skills among young people, and improving social connection and physical wellbeing among older adults; believes that intergenerational learning is an intentional, learned practice, rather than incidental or occasional interactions; notes that the Generations Working Together Excellence Awards ceremony was held during Loneliness Awareness Week on 11 June 2024, recognising that loneliness can affect people of all ages and that intergenerational learning and friendships between younger and older generations can benefit those affected; commends Generations Working Together for its work to increase intergenerational practice in Scotland, including delivering training, increasing awareness, and developing comprehensive publications on best practice, and hopes for the continued growth of intergenerational learning.
