The Eve Appeal’s Campaign to "Get Lippy" about the Five Gynaecological Cancers

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the work of The Eve Appeal’s campaign to raise awareness and encourage people to "Get Lippy" about the five gynaecological cancers, which took place in May 2024; acknowledges that the campaign, which joined forces with representatives from the health and beauty industry, set out to challenge the taboos that can surround gynaecological health and encouraged women to open up, have life-saving conversations and feel comfortable talking about their bodies; understands that The Eve Appeal started as the Gynaecology Cancer Research Fund in 1984, and that, since its inception, its ground-breaking medical research has focused on risk prediction, early detection and ultimately prevention of gynaecological cancers; further understands that, in 2002, the charity changed its name to The Eve Appeal and is still the only national charity raising awareness and funding research for the prevention and earlier diagnosis of all five gynaecological cancers, which includes womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal; expresses concern that, in the UK, around 22,050 women are diagnosed each year with gynaecological cancer, with 21 women tragically dying every day from the disease; acknowledges in particular The Eve Appeal’s work during Cervical Screening Awareness Week, which runs from 17 to 23 June 2024; understands that there are around 323 cases of cervical cancer in Scotland, and around 95 deaths from the disease each year; believes that regular screening is essential to help prevent cervical cancer from developing, and that people must understand and urgently address the barriers that prevent women from being screened, and wishes The Eve Appeal the very best of luck as it raises much-needed awareness of the gynaecological cancers, their signs and symptoms.
