The motion
That the Parliament commends Asda for its initiative to create Nanzones, football fanzones specifically for the older generation, during this summer’s EURO 2024 tournament to help combat loneliness and isolation; is delighted the Nanzone at Asda Bearsden, in the Strathkelvin and Bearsden constituency, has been a success with more than 40 people turning up to watch Scotland’s match against Switzerland on 19 June 2024 in a safe and friendly environment; applauds community champion, Ryan Rooney, who has been the driving force behind the Nanzone at Bearsden; understands that each Nanzone provides free food, drink, transport and televised live sports; further understands that the initiative came about after Asda’s Togetherness Tracker poll revealed that 60% of customers cite loneliness and social isolation as key issues that need tackling in local communities, with older people highlighted as the group most in need of support, and commends Asda for including housebound local people in the initiative, with grocery home shopping drivers wearing "happy to chat about the match" badges to encourage customers to have a blether when their orders are delivered.
