Community Efforts Restore a Historic Landmark

That the Parliament understands that the Bruce Obelisk, a historic landmark commemorating the life of explorer James Bruce of Kinnaird that was originally crafted by Carron Iron Works, has been restored and returned to its original place on the Bruce family tomb in Larbert Old Church graveyard; commends Falkirk Council and its partners, WSP and Lost Art Limited, for leading the restoration efforts, which included repairs to original ironwork, reproducing missing parts and renewing the pathway around the tomb; understands that the project was funded by Historic Environment Scotland and Avondale Environmental, as well as Falkirk Council, with additional donations from Falkirk Local History Society and Falkirk Preceptory and Priory; considers that the project has restored a significant historical monument, united the community, emphasised the importance of shared heritage and highlighted the world-leading craftsmanship of the Carron Iron Works, as well as increasing awareness of Carron Iron Works’ place in Scotland’s industrial revolution; believes that the project provided an opportunity for the community to get hands-on with its local history and learn vital conservation skills, building on the significant role that the local community played in the restoration venture in 2022, when teachers and pupils of Larbert High School’s art and design and English departments created projects inspired by James Bruce’s legacy, under the guidance of local historian, Geoff Bailey; congratulates all participants on completing the restoration, which also enjoyed support from local groups Falkirk Made Friends, Communities Along the Carron, Forth Valley Traditional Building Forum and Larbert Old Parish Church, and hopes that all participants will be able to promote opportunities in the future to use the skills that they have gained in restoration and conservation projects.
