Electricity Pricing Reform

Lodged by Kevin Stewart Standard Motion 7 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes recent comments from Greg Jackson, who is the founder of Octopus Energy, calling for regional pricing of electricity to allow people living near wind power developments to get discounted energy; agrees with Mr Jackson that changing regulations in this manner would lead to Scotland having "the cheapest electricity in Europe", making the nation a highly-attractive destination for new data centres and delivering lower energy bills for consumers; notes that under the current constitutional settlement, the powers required to deliver such changes are reserved to the UK Parliament; calls on the UK Government to commit to reforming the UK energy market to allow regional pricing models to be implemented, and believes that it is only with independence that Scotland will be able to truly harness its renewable energy resources to deliver lower bills for people and allow communities to take full advantage of their potential.
