100 Years of Glasgow Buses

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges and celebrates the centenary of Glasgow Buses, marking 100 years since the introduction of motorbuses by Glasgow Corporation Transport on 8 December 1924, with a parade taking place on 3 August 2024; believes that the introduction of these motorbuses represented a significant enhancement to the city's transportation infrastructure, initially serving as feeder services to Glasgow's extensive tram network; notes that the first route, from Greendyke Street to Maryhill, carried over 46,000 passengers in its inaugural week, and that the motorbus service quickly became an integral part of Glasgow’s public transport system; understands that the initial plan to launch a service between Bridgeton Cross and Partick was modified, with buses operating from Parkhead tram depot in the city’s east end; commends the evolution of Glasgow's bus network over the past century, highlighting its role in expanding transit options, supporting economic growth, and improving accessibility for Glasgow; understands that, to celebrate this milestone, a special parade through Glasgow’s streets will showcase historic and contemporary buses, honouring the contributions of past and present employees and recognising what it sees as the importance of public transport in the city’s development; extends its congratulations to Glasgow’s public transport community, and reaffirms its support for ongoing advancements in public transportation to ensure that Glasgow’s bus services continue to thrive for future generations.
