Commending Sir Andy Murray on an Exceptional Tennis Career

The motion

That the Parliament commends Sir Andy Murray on his outstanding tennis career, following his retirement from professional tennis; acknowledges his remarkable achievements in an era widely considered to be the most competitive in men's tennis, including winning three Grand Slam singles titles, two Olympic Gold medals, leading Great Britain to Davis Cup success, and reaching the world number one ranking as the first Briton ever to do so, where he stayed for 41 consecutive weeks; notes his final match in the Olympic quarter-finals doubles with Dan Evans against American opponents, where he displayed characteristic determination and sportsmanship; recognises what it sees as the significant impact of his accomplishments on tennis participation in Britain, with over 5.6 million adults and 3.6 million children playing tennis last year, and particularly in Scotland, where adult annual participation reportedly increased by 19% to 374,000 and the number of children playing annually rose by 23% to 275,000 since 2020; welcomes the Lawn Tennis Association's (LTA) commitment to investing £5 million towards a new community tennis and sports centre at Park of Keir, near Dunblane, led by Judy Murray; celebrates the continued investment in Scottish tennis infrastructure and programs, including the LTA Youth programme, which has trained 22,000 teachers, including 1,800 in Scotland, and aims to ensure that Andy Murray's legacy endures through future generations, and notes the LTA's announcement that the centre court seating arena at The Queen’s Club Championships will be named the Andy Murray Arena from 2025, as a fitting tribute to one of Britain’s greatest athletes.
