Applied Shipbuilding Academy Glasgow

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates BAE Systems Naval Ships on the opening of its state-of-the-art Applied Shipbuilding Academy in Glasgow; notes that the shipbuilding academy, based at Scotstoun shipyard, formerly Yarrow Shipbuilders Limited (YSL), will provide training for a shipbuilding workforce of almost 4,500 people from new-starts to senior leaders, including nearly 700 apprentices; welcomes the £12 million investment in the Applied Shipbuilding Academy, which is part of a wider £300 million capital investment programme at BAE Systems’ two shipbuilding sites in Glasgow over the next five years; notes that Scottish Enterprise has supported the project with a grant of £360,000; understands that the 5,500 square metre facility comprises of a modern trade hall that will allow apprentices to gain hands-on experience with mock-up ships and also a learning hub with over 30 teaching spaces, a cutting-edge science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) innovation lab, an exhibition area and conference space, and believes that the Applied Shipbuilding Academy will bolster national shipbuilding capabilities and support the continued growth of what remains the largest manufacturing industry in Glasgow and the west of Scotland, and, it understands, the country’s biggest employer of apprentices, with 300 apprentices and graduates expected to join the Clydeside workforce in 2024.
