World Suicide Prevention Day 10 September 2024
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September 2024; notes that the theme is "Changing the Narrative on Suicide", with the call to action to "Start the Conversation"; understands that the theme aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encourage open conversations to prevent suicides; further understands that, at any one time, around one in 25 people are contemplating suicide, and that, on average, two people go on to take their own life every day in Scotland; considers that many people struggle to cope at one point or another in their lives, and that being able to reach out to someone could help them to know that someone cares, that they are valued, and to assist them in accessing the support that they need, and recognises that every life lost represents someone’s partner, child, parent, friend or colleague.
