Safety of Female Athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympics
The motion
As an amendment to motion S6M-14025 in the name of Tess White (Safety of Female Athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympics), leave out from "notes" to end and insert "congratulates Imane Khelif, who represented Algeria, on securing a gold medal following her victory in the Women's 66kg final boxing match at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris; notes with concern what it considers to be the torrent of misogynistic abuse that she and other female boxers, including Lin Yu-ting, who represented Taiwan, faced throughout the competition; acknowledges that the International Olympic Committee President, Thomas Bach, reportedly said that the “hate speech” directed at boxers, Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting, at the Paris Olympics was “totally unacceptable”; agrees with the reported comments of the International Olympic Committee President that "we will not take part in a politically motivated [...] cultural war”; notes that Angela Carini, who represented Italy and competed against Khelif in the 66kg category, reportedly apologised for not shaking hands with Khelif following the match, saying "I'm sorry for my opponent, too. If the IOC said she can fight, I respect that decision"; deplores what it sees as the widespread disinformation and misinformation concerning the eligibility of the two women to compete in the Olympic Games, and asserts that elected parliamentarians, public figures and the media have a responsibility to counter any disinformation and misinformation that could lead to the safety of female athletes being compromised."
