Shetland’s Lead Openreach Engineer Retires After Almost 50 Years
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Kenny Malcolmson, Openreach’s lead engineer in Shetland, as he begins his retirement; acknowledges what it sees as the immense contribution that Kenny has made to improving island connectivity, ensuring that Shetland is able to access the opportunities of the digital age; recognises the vital role that broadband connectivity plays in supporting Shetland’s economy, and the wellbeing of islanders; understands that Kenny began his career in what was then the Post Office Telephones in July 1975 as a 17-year-old apprentice; further understands that Kenny took on the role of lead engineer in 2010, managing a team of 20 Openreach employees working in Shetland; notes that, aside from his professional career, Kenny also had a successful amateur football career playing for, and occasionally captaining, the Shetland team between 1976 and 1990; commends the work of every Openreach engineer working to connect Scotland’s communities to better broadband, and wishes Kenny a long and happy retirement.
