Decarbonising the Oil and Gas Sector

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the launch of a new research initiative from the University of Aberdeen focused on decarbonising the oil and gas sector, backed by £600,000 of investment from nine energy companies; understands that the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), based in the School of Geosciences and led by the University's Director for Energy Transition, Professor John Underhill, will focus on delivering world-class research by equipping researchers with the skills, knowledge and expertise required to provide energy security while reducing emissions and decarbonisation to help accelerate the energy transition; further understands that this investment from BP, Chevron, CNOOC, ExxonMobil, Equinor, Harbour Energy, Shell, Spirit Energy and TotalEnergies will support training and PhD studentships, with the endorsement of Offshore Energies UK (OEUK); believes that the funding from these nine companies sends a strong message about the confidence industry has in the Centre for Doctoral Training's ability to move the energy transition forward and assist the industry's shift to cleaner energy; looks forward to the fruits of this investment and research from the University, helping Scotland make progress on the path to net zero, and wishes all the staff and researchers involved all the best in their endeavours on what it sees as this crucial work.
