Labour’s North Sea Policies

The motion

That the Parliament notes with concern the strong words of Jim Johnson, CEO of Hunting PLC, that the UK is "committing suicide economically" over North Sea policies; understands that the comments, which were reported in Energy Voice on 29 August 2024, refer to the new UK Labour administration's policies of raising the tax rate of the Energy Profits Levy (EPL) and removing associated investment allowances; notes Mr Johnson's reported comments comparing these with the Norwegian Government's approach to the North Sea and recognising that the Norwegians believe that the energy transition will take place over decades rather than years; considers that Mr Johnson's comments highlight the need for the UK Government to rethink how it is approaching the task of delivering the energy transition, and hopes that they go some way to convincing the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to start working with the energy industry to ensure that there is a just transition that does not cause tens of thousands of jobs in the north east to be lost needlessly.
