The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) on a successful return in 2024; understands that EIFF returned for the first time since 2022, ran from 15 to 21 August 2024 and was attended by over 12,000 people; notes that EIFF partnered with Edinburgh venues such as the Cameo Cinema, Monkey Barrel Comedy and Summerhall, demonstrating, it believes, the value of supporting cultural venues in Scottish cities; recognises what it sees as the value of culture to “Brand Scotland”, which, it understands, is estimated to be adding £367 million to Scotland’s economy, and £407 million in Edinburgh; believes that Scotland’s festivals are operating in a “perfect storm” of rising costs; views with concern what it sees as the Scottish Government’s failure to provide clarity on arts funding, which, it believes, has left festivals and arts organisations in the dark regarding their long-term financial sustainability; hopes for the continued success of Edinburgh’s festival season, and wishes all those involved in EIFF well.
