Organ Donation Week, 23 to 30 September 2024

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 23 to 30 September 2024 is Organ Donation Week; recognises that the organ donor register celebrates its 30th anniversary; understands that the aim of the week is to raise awareness of organs needed for organ donation and encourage more people to register to become an organ donor on the NHS organ donor register; believes that, while Scotland has an opt-out system of organ donation, it is still vitally important that people make their decisions known by sharing them with family and friends to avoid any doubt as next of kin and families cooperation is required to proceed at this sensitive time; understands that there is a particular concern about the availability of organs from those from ethnic minority backgrounds, and that a third of the people waiting for an organ are from an ethnic minority background; further understands that there will be many events to raise awareness; understands that, due to a shortage of organs, there are, on average, 500 individuals in Scotland waiting for a transplant at any one time; believes that organ donation can dramatically improve and save lives; understands that every donor has the potential to save up to nine lives and that, if tissue, bone and eye donation are included, this figure can increase, and encourages everyone to consider their own position in regard to organ donation and to discuss and share that decision with family and friends.
