International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
The motion
That the Parliament notes that 16 September 2024 marked International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer; understands that the ozone layer is a fragile shield of gas that protects the Earth from the rays of the sun, which ultimately helps to preserve life on Earth; considers that the phaseout of controlled uses of ozone-depleting substances and the related reductions have not only helped protect the ozone layer for this generation, as well as future generations, but has also significantly contributed to the global efforts to address climate change; recognises what it sees as the importance of the Montreal Protocol, which aims to protect the ozone layer by taking measures to control the total global production and consumption of substances that deplete it, with the ultimate objective of their elimination on the basis of developments in scientific knowledge and technological information; welcomes the introduction of the Climate Change (Emissions Reduction Targets) (Scotland) Bill in response to the Climate Change Committee’s indication that Scotland’s interim emissions reduction target for 2030 was beyond what could be achieved; understands that the Bill seeks to set a limit on the amount of greenhouse gases emitted over a five-year period; recognises what it sees as the Scottish Government’s continued commitment to ending Scotland’s contribution to global emissions by 2045, with, it understands, Scotland continuing to lead the UK in the delivery of long-term emissions reductions, and understands that this World Ozone Day is not only for celebrating the achievements to date, but also looking to the future for deeper and faster action under the Montreal Protocol.
