Transparency of Political Donations in the UK

That the Parliament notes the reported £4 million donation made to the UK Labour Party by Quadrature Capital, a company that, it understands, has significant investments in fossil fuels, arms manufacturing and private healthcare firms, and which is owned by a firm registered in the Cayman Islands; understands that, according to Electoral Commission records, this donation was received in the one-week window between the announcement of the 2024 UK General Election and the start of the pre-poll reporting period, which requires all political donations over £11,180 to be published weekly, rather than the usual quarterly publication; further understands that this means that, despite being made on 28 May 2024, Quadrature’s donation was made public by the Electoral Commission more than two months after Labour won the election; believes, with concern, that, as a result, this donation was able to avoid due scrutiny during the election period; highlights what it sees as the need for clear, transparent and timely reporting of all political donations to safeguard the trust of people in the democratic process, including those in the Clackmannanshire and Dunblane constituency; notes the calls for all political parties to adhere to the highest levels of transparency regarding donations, and further notes the calls for the UK Government to introduce stronger rules to improve transparency in relation to donations to political parties.
