First Lottery Funding for the Glasgow Chinese Recreation Centre

The motion

That the Parliament sends its congratulations to the Glasgow Chinese RecreationCentre on being awarded its first National Lottery grant; understands that thevolunteer-run group in Possilpark brings the local Chinese diaspora togetherthrough cultural activities such as tai chi, fan dancing and a weekly lunchclub, which is filled with delicious home-cooked meals; further understands thatthe majority of members are older people who were isolated until they found thegroup; notes that, as well as its lunch club and community allotment, the grouphas a colourful array of exercise classes to help members stay active and respondto any physical and mental health challenges they face; understands that themembers enjoy sharing their rich cultural heritage, and have recently broughtthe art of tai chi fan, which is a combination of tai chi and fan dancing, to schoolsin the area, captivating students with their graceful movements; believes thatin the past few months, they have also showcased their talents at variousevents, including the Springburn Community Street Festival, where theyperformed both fan-dancing and tai chi; acknowledges that the group is one of48 groups sharing £460,000 from the Ethnic Minority Development Fund, whichaims to break down barriers and create opportunities for such bodies acrossScotland, and acknowledges the collaboration between the National LotteryCommunity Fund and the Council of Ethnic Minority Voluntary SectorOrganisations Scotland to address challenges that often prevent ethnic minoritygroups from accessing such funding, such as language barriers and complexapplication processes.
