Investment in Subsea HVDC Cable Manufacturing at Hunterston

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the announcement by the UK Infrastructure Bank (UKIB) of a £20 million investment in XLCC to establish a world-leading subsea high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable manufacturing facility in Hunterston, North Ayrshire, with the potential for an additional £67 million contingent on development milestones; notes that this comes after a £9 million grant by Scottish Enterprise to develop the facility, as well as £200,000 to establish a dedicated temporary apprenticeship training facility in Irvine; considers that this investment aligns with Scotland’s ambitions for a net zero economy and the growth of the green industry; acknowledges the creation of approximately 900 permanent jobs, including over 200 apprenticeships, which will enhance local employment and skills development in North Ayrshire; understands that the Hunterston factory will significantly contribute to Scotland’s clean energy mission by strengthening domestic supply chains for essential components, thereby facilitating the connection of renewable energy sources and enhancing energy security across the country, and commends the collaborative efforts of both the public and private sectors in driving forward the transition to a sustainable energy future, reinforcing what it considers to be Scotland’s position as a leader in green technology and manufacturing.
