University of Strathclyde Passes "EmilyTest" for its Approach to Tackling Gender-based Violence

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the University of Strathclyde on being awarded the EmilyTest GBV Charter in recognition of its work to tackle gender-based violence (GBV) on its campus; notes that the Charter was created between March 2020 and March 2021 by the mother of Emily Drouet, a student who reportedly took her own life in 2016 after being subjected to a campaign of gender-based violence by a fellow student; understands that Emily’s mother, Fiona, has undertaken extensive research across Scotland and the UK with hundreds of students, graduates, further education and higher education staff, violence against women and girls professionals, and third sector professionals working with various groups such as ethnic minority women, disabled students and LGBT youth representatives to create an award that allows educational institutions to take the EmilyTest; further understands that the test is made up of five principles with over 40 minimum standards that institutions must meet in order to pass the EmilyTest, including having a GBV policy, a GBV reporting tool and a clearly defined duty of care; welcomes that the Charter provides a “toolbox” alongside guided coaching for colleges and universities to prevent, intervene and respond to GBV, in line with best practice; acknowledges that the EmilyTest supports institutions through one-to-one coaching, providing dedicated staff support, resources and opportunities to share good practice with the sector to enable implementation of the framework; notes that institutions gain the Charter by presenting evidence of their work to a panel of independent experts, and congratulates everyone involved in achieving this recognition at the University of Strathclyde.
