The Outrun Youth Exchange at the Edinburgh Festival

The motion

That the Parliament celebrates the success of the Youth Exchange project, part of 2024’s Edinburgh International Festival, which aims to connect young people from Edinburgh with peers from another national or international location; understands that this programme involved 17 young people from Kirkwall Grammar School in Orkney and the Lyceum Youth Theatre in Edinburgh exploring themes related to the performance of Stef Smith and Vicky Featherstone’s adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s novel, The Outrun, such as nature, home and a sense of identity, supported by local artists and artists from the production; recognises that the young people from Edinburgh travelled to Orkney in June 2024 where the two groups met for the first time and worked creatively together; understands that the project culminated on 10 August, when the groups attended a performance of The Outrun and viewed an installation of their creative work, presented in the Church Hill Theatre; applauds the Youth Exchange project for facilitating young people’s artistic expression and their ability to engage with complex artistic themes, and, in some cases, their own life experiences, and pays tribute to the project for promoting life-long friendships and enriched connections between the young people from Edinburgh and Orkney.
