Sad Passing of Healthcare Expert, Professor Alison Britton

The motion

That the Parliament expresses its deepest regret at the passing of healthcare expert, Professor Alison Britton; notes that Alison, who was a Professor of Healthcare and Medical Law at Glasgow Caledonian University, sadly passed away in July 2024 after a short illness; acknowledges that Professor Britton had a distinguished career and that, as part of her work providing expertise on healthcare issues, she consulted for the World Health Organization, the UK Department of Health, the Scottish Government and the British Medical Association; believes that Professor Britton completed crucial work on the mesh scandal and helped many women in Scotland and across the world through her comprehensive investigations; understands that Professor Britton was commissioned by the Scottish Government to carry out an investigation into how independent reviews should be established, managed and supported, in response to serious concerns about the findings of a previous report on the use and safety of mesh implants in Scotland; acknowledges that Professor Britton was also asked by the Scottish Government to take forward a case record review of the care and treatment experienced by mesh injured women; considers that there was unanimous political agreement that the 21 recommendations of the report should be implemented in full; believes that Professor Britton, through her tireless efforts, integrity and unwavering commitment to establishing the facts, commanded the full confidence, support and respect of Scottish mesh survivors, whose lives have been irrevocably altered through damaging mesh surgery; considers that Professor Britton's passing is a major loss to healthcare both in Scotland and globally, and offers condolences to her family at this very challenging period.
