Borders Railway Extension

The motion

That the Parliament recognises what it considers to be the importance of the potential extension of the Borders Railway from Tweedbank to Carlisle; understands that the Borderlands Growth Deal, which was signed in 2021, stated that up to £10 million of funding would be available, made up of £5 million each from the UK and Scottish governments, for use on a feasibility study on this extension; believes that a number of campaigners are concerned that the UK Government's portion of this funding may be reviewed or withdrawn following the recent General Election, which brought in a Labour administration; further believes that there is a great deal of support for this extension, following what it sees as the success of the partial reopening of the line to Tweedbank, which has been part of the wider, decades-long campaign, to reinstate the full Borders Railway, following what it considers was its previous controversial closure during the Beeching closures in 1969, and notes the view that promises made on this must be honoured.
