Ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

That the Parliament welcomes the reported ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) by a further three UN member states, namely Indonesia, Sierra Leone and Solomon Islands; understands that this brings the total number of signatories to 94, with 73 of these nations having fully ratified the treaty and incorporated it into their national legislation; considers that Indonesia’s ratification of the treaty is significant, in light of its position as the largest country by population to have ratified the TPNW, having consistently been involved in keeping Southeast Asia a nuclear weapons-free zone, and due to being a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN); understands that, despite a majority of respondents believing that the UK should ratify the TPNW and three quarters believing that the UK should participate in TPNW meetings, as indicated by a poll conducted by Survation on behalf of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the UK has neither signed nor ratified the TPNW and has consistently voted against an annual UN General Assembly resolution that would lead to the adoption of the TPNW; hopes that what it sees as this increased global participation with and support for the TPNW will lead to the UK reconsidering its opposition to the adoption of the TPNW, and encourages it to attend the third meeting of the TPNW in March 2025 as an observer state.
