University of Glasgow Team Receives £11 Million of Funding for Stem Cell Research

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Professor Matt Dalby and his team at the University of Glasgow on securing £11 million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for the MAINSTREAM project, aimed at pioneering large-scale stem cell manufacturing; notes that this project will explore the development of materials to support the growth of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) outside the body, enabling tissue regeneration, blood cancer treatment, and advances in transplant therapies; recognises what it considers to be the potential for this research to transform healthcare and enhance Scotland’s global leadership in medical innovation; further recognises that this project is being undertaken in collaboration with the universities of Strathclyde and Nottingham, and has received £1.5 million of industry investment; acknowledges that the team will work closely with partners, the NHS and Scotland’s population to drive forward the scaling up of stem cell research, and looks forward to hearing about the progression of what it sees as this innovative and exciting project, which will use ground-breaking new technologies to tackle some of the biggest problems in healthcare.
