NHS Forth Valley Nurses Scale Ben Nevis for Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates two nurses from NHS Forth Valley who have been "turning the peaks pink" as part of a national event to raise awareness for organ and tissue donation; understands that May Cooper and Caroline Gallier, who work within the Scotland Organ Donation Services team at Forth Valley Royal Hospital, set themselves the challenge of climbing Ben Nevis as part of Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week 2024; further understands that May and Caroline joined the families of donors and transplant recipients, who came together in a simultaneous summit of six famous peaks across the country on 27 September 2024, including Scafell Pike in England, Yr Wyddfa and Pen y Fan in Wales, Snaefall on the Isle of Man, and Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland; notes that the challenge saw people carry photographs of their loved ones to the mountain summits to mark the organ and tissue donation awareness event; understands that around 600 people across Scotland are currently waiting for an organ transplant, including many patients in the NHS Forth Valley area; is enthused that over half of people in the NHS Forth Valley area (55.3%) have now registered their donation decision, with 52% opting in to donation and just 3.3% choosing to opt out; acknowledges that, by signing up to the organ donor register, people can help save the lives of several seriously ill patients, and that this can be done by registering their decision with Organ Donation Scotland via the website or its helpline on 0300 123 2323, and commends May and Caroline, as well as everyone who took part in this event across the UK, on their highly magnanimous efforts.
