Benholm’s Tower

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Tillydrone Community Development Trust (TCDT) in Aberdeen on being awarded £56,623 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to restore and reinstate the external historical fabric of the B-listed Benholm’s Tower, known locally as Wallace Tower; notes that the tower, which dates back to the early 17th century, was originally created as a town lodgings for Sir Robert Keith of Benholm, but got its more common name from a corruption of its nickname Wall Hoose Close, due to the public well that once stood nearby; recognises that the tower previously stood in the Nether Kirkgate area of Aberdeen until it was moved, brick by brick, to its current location on the edge of Seaton Park, to make way for Marks and Spencer and the then-new St Nicholas shopping centre, which has since been left unoccupied and derelict for 20 years; understands that the TCDT wishes to bring the tower into community use by converting the ground floor into a café area, the first floor into a hall or exhibition space, as it was originally intended when it was built, and the upper floor into a space suitable as office space for a small business, an artist workspace, or a co-worker or remote working hub; believes that it is vital that heritage sites such as this are preserved and maintained for continued public use, and wishes the trust all the best in making its plans a grand reality.
