Lodged by Clare Haughey (Scottish National Party) Standard Motion 21 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament commends the efforts of volunteers in securing funding to build a new Men’s Shed at The High Backs in the Burnhill area of Rutherglen; understands that the newly-formed Burnhill MENding Minds group, led by volunteer Tony McDonald, aims to provide local men the opportunity to meet up, socialise and learn practical skills; further understands that the group’s successful bid via South Lanarkshire Council’s Participatory Budgeting scheme will allow it to build a shed to host activities such as joinery, plumbing, garden maintenance and cycling; commends the efforts of lead volunteer, Lizzy McDonald, and her team, whose hard work and vision has transformed the previously derelict site at The High Backs into a valued community resource, including timber sheds, which are used as community spaces, a coffee hut, a stage, and community gardens; appreciates what it sees as the significant and positive impact that the Men’s Shed movement has had in communities across Scotland in reducing social isolation and promoting wellbeing, and wishes Burnhill MENding Minds all the very best for its future endeavours.
