Availability and Accessibility of Toilets for People Living with a Stoma
The motion
That the Parliament understands that 20,000 people across Scotland are living with a stoma, following surgery for conditions such as Crohn’s disease and colitis; further understands that people with stomas need access to toilets to change and dispose stoma bags regularly, hygienically and privately; notes that this requires a fully enclosed cubicle with access to a sink and disposal facilities; considers that a lack of toilets can tie people to their homes and lead to social isolation; believes that toilet facilities must be considered in the planning stages for large shops and shopping centres, building on the current legal duties; considers that such facilities must ensure privacy and consideration for people with invisible disabilities, and believes, therefore, that publicly accessible toilets are crucial to improving the quality of life of people living with a stoma, and that such facilities should be protected across Scotland.
