Recognising the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the annual 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence campaign, taking place between 25 November, which is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and 10 December 2024, which is Human Rights Day; further recognises that this year’s theme is "Towards Beijing +30: UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls", which makes reference to the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA), a global policy framework for gender equality and women's rights; acknowledges that this campaign was started by activists at the inauguration of the Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991, and is used as an organising strategy by individuals and organisations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls; expresses concern at reports that an estimated 736 million women, almost one in three, have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their life; notes reports that, in 2022, around 48,800 women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members, accounting to 55% of all female homicides; expresses concern that the latest domestic abuse figures published by the Scottish Government showed that 61,934 cases of domestic abuse were recorded in the space of a year, and notes the calls for the Scottish Government to take concrete action to eliminate domestic abuse and violence against women and girls.
