Recognising the Transgender Day of Remembrance 2024
The motion
That the Parliament recognises Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), which occurs on 20 November every year to commemorate trans people now and throughout history who have lost their lives due to anti-trans violence; understands that violence is not only physical, but can include silencing, stigmatisation, verbal harassment and denial of services, which it considers are all experiences that are common for trans people today; believes that what it sees as the toxic environment against transgender people is too often emboldened by the media and by politicians; notes what it considers to be the responsibility on the Scottish Parliament to ensure the current and future safety and access to rights of all people living in Scotland, particularly those who it believes are marginalised or oppressed, such as trans people; commends those involved in the vigil held at the University of Dundee's Global Room, which was organised by Dundee Pride, the Women's Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre, the University of Dundee LGBT+ Staff and Postgraduate Network, and Dundee Women’s Aid, as well as the vigil held in Aberdeen organised by Four Pillars, an organisation that supports LGBTQIA+ people across Grampian, and further commends all those who work to support trans people, including charities such as LGBT Scotland, Stonewall, Under One Rainbow, the Equality Network, Scottish Trans Alliance and many more, as well as individuals who are committed to furthering trans rights.
