Heriot-Watt University to Explore Impact of Domestic Abuse on Deaf Mothers and Their Families

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the importance of the first-of-a-kind study being led by Heriot-Watt University into the impact of domestic abuse on deaf women and their families; expresses concern that deaf women are reportedly up to three times more likely to experience domestic abuse than hearing women, with abusers often exploiting their deafness to exert control through coercive behaviours, such as gaslighting and financial manipulation; acknowledges the unique challenges faced by children who may be compelled to interpret on behalf of their mothers, due to a lack of interpretation support, exposing families to further emotional and psychological strain; highlights the importance of understanding these specific difficulties and their broader implications for families, and urges police and other support services to enhance access to British Sign Language (BSL) resources to ensure that deaf women receive equitable and effective support.
