NHS Grampian's Use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes reports that NHS Grampian will be using waste oil and fats for back-up generators, reducing CO2 emissions by around 80% compared with the use of diesel; notes that the back-up generators for all new buildings at the Foresterhill Health Campus in Aberdeen will be powered by hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) to help reduce carbon emissions; understands that the fuel needed to power back-up generators for hospitals is significant, with the Aberdeen Maternity Hospital alone using 486 litres of fuel per hour, and the tanks for the Baird Family Hospital, the ANCHOR Centre and new mortuary building requiring 68,000 litres, 12,000 litres and 14,500 litres respectively to fill; congratulates the head of sustainability compliance and risk at NHS Grampian, Robert Hobkirk, on what it sees as this important step towards decarbonisation, and hopes that it is successful in helping NHS Grampian to move towards the target of ensuring that all building emissions reach net zero by 2038.
