The Safe Passage Project

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Safe Passage project, which is a pilot scheme based on the Solway Firth, in the South Scotland region, that utilises satellite imagery to identify navigation channels through uncharted waters during sea rescue missions; understands that current state-of-the-art marine navigation can leave areas blank and uncharted, restricting the ability of rescue services to support safe access without the risk of becoming casualties themselves; recognises the reported benefits of using synthetic aperture radar data from satellites to provide regular, accurate mapping of moving channels across the south of Scotland, particularly in nocturnal or cloudy conditions, and commends Nith Inshore Rescue and the University of Strathclyde for their role in developing what it sees as this important project, which has been funded by the European Space Agency.
