University of Aberdeen High Voltage Direct Current Research Team

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that researchers from the University of Aberdeen are to take part in a Europe-wide project seeking to improve the performance, reliability and cost of components essential to a greener future; notes that the University's High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) research team is one of nine partners on a new three-year Horizon Europe project, called MoWiLife (Condition Monitoring and Wide Bandgap Power Electronics - Leading Innovations for the European Energy Sector), seeking to study new transistor technologies based on silicon carbide (SiC) and their applications in power generation and transmission; understands that the move from carbon energy sources towards electrification is placing a growing demand on power converters and other power-electronics components, rather than traditional power systems based on electro-mechanical components, and that this research will investigate the potential benefits of SiC MOSFET (metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors), with a view to eventually developing a high-voltage direct current grid; believes that this project highlights the excellent standard of research at the University of Aberdeen, and hopes that those involved in the project, including Professor Dragan Jovcic and Dr Xin Yuan, are successful in their endeavours.
