Lochies School Shines in Sport and Physical Education Activities
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Lochies School in Sauchie, Alloa, on being nominated as a finalist in the School Sport Award category at the Scottish Sports Awards 2024, which took place on 4 December 2024 at the Glasgow Science Centre; understands that the school, which has already attained a sportscotland Gold award, was selected as one of only three schools across Scotland to be shortlisted in this category; considers that this recognition is based on the strength of Lochies' application, highlighting the important part that physical education, activities and sports have within the school; considers that the school ensures that every child’s health and wellbeing is prioritised, with the school benefiting from the local authority’s sport and leisure team, which provides two hours of physical education each week, delivered by qualified PE teachers; notes that the school’s Active Schools coordinator supports attendance at various local sports events, with successes leading to qualification at national events in cross-country, boccia and athletics, in addition to participating in the Clackmannanshire Primary Schools GymFest, P5 swimming programme, Bikeability programme, and water confidence sessions at the Hydro pool at Alloa Academy; notes that, each year, the Lochies School's sports committee self-assesses the school against the eight categories of the sportscotland School Sport Award, creating an action plan to improve and develop the school's physical education, physical activity and sports, with leadership for learners being a crucial aspect of the sportscotland School Sport Award; further notes that its sports committee is made up of senior pupils and is supported by school staff, PE teachers and the Active Schools coordinator, with one notable parental engagement event initiated in the last year being "A Dam Good Day", at Gartmorn Dam, where students engaged in various sports and physical activities, including archery, equine therapy and yoga, and commends everyone involved, including staff and pupils, on their truly fantastic focus on, and enthusiasm for, their health and wellbeing.
