Celebrating 185 Years of the Scottish SPCA
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Scottish SPCA) on reaching the remarkable milestone of 185 years of service; acknowledges the charity's enduring commitment to protecting animals and preventing harm since its founding in 1839; commends the Scottish SPCA for its pioneering work, and for being the first animal welfare charity in the UK to secure legal powers to investigate and report animal cruelty; recognises what it sees as the charity’s innovative approach to animal welfare, including its education programmes such as its ground-breaking Animal Guardians programme, as well as its fostering, rescue and rehoming services, wildlife rehabilitation, and initiatives tackling the illegal puppy trade; applauds the Scottish SPCA for its collaboration with local authorities, Police Scotland, and other partners to uphold the highest standards of animal welfare in Scotland; recognises the charity's move to collaborate with human welfare-based organisations in a bid to support and raise awareness of the interconnections between animal welfare, human welfare and the shared environment; notes what it considers to be the Scottish SPCA's proactive efforts in promoting ethical pet ownership, addressing issues such as low-welfare breeding, and delivering essential support for communities across Scotland and their animals, which includes delivering and expanding its Pet Aid initiative for food and veterinary services; further notes what it sees as the animal welfare charity’s role in creating a kinder and more compassionate society, and extends its gratitude to the staff, volunteers, and supporters who have contributed to the Scottish SPCA’s successes over the past 185 years.
