Aberdeen City Council Writes Off School Meal Debt
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the reports that the Scottish National Party (SNP)-led administration at Aberdeen City Council is writing off over £400,000 of school meal debt to help struggling families; understands that the move, which will see £411,977.90 of debt accrued up to 31 March 2024 wiped out, is part of the local authority’s commitment to tackling child poverty; believes that funding is being provided through the £1.5 million School Meal Debt Fund from the Scottish Government; understands that this was set up to allow councils to apply for an emergency one-off fund to deal with debt build-up; congratulates the administration, including the Convener of Finance and Resources, Councillor Alex McLellan, on what it sees as it taking this opportunity to give direct support to families during the ongoing cost of living crisis, and hopes that this move ensures that no child in Aberdeen is penalised for struggling to pay for school meals.
