Recognising Ergate Ayana for Services to Responding to Blindness in Ethiopia
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Ergate Ayana, who is a retired nurse from Greenock, on being appointed an MBE in the New Year Honours List for his outstanding contribution to healthcare and dealing with blindness in Ethiopia; notes that Ergate founded Fighting Blindness Ethiopia in 2006, which is a charity that has transformed thousands of lives by providing sight-saving surgeries and medical care to people in need; acknowledges his remarkable career, which included roles at Inverclyde Royal Hospital, the Southern General Hospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary before dedicating himself to international medical missions in Ethiopia, India, Pakistan and the Far East; commends his lifelong dedication to helping others, including, it understands, restoring sight to 4,000 people and examining over 10,000 in Ethiopia over the years, and celebrates the inspiration that Ergate provides through his selfless work and commitment to improving the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable communities.
