Commemorating Muriel Jaffrey as a True Aberdonian

The motion

That the Parliament notes with great sadness the passing of Muriel Jaffrey; notes that Muriel was an Aberdeen City Councillor for 18 years, representing the city’s Donmouth ward from 1999 to 2007 and the Bridge of Don ward from 2007 until she stood down at the 2017 election; further notes that, during this time, she chaired the city’s Licensing Board for five years, was appointed a Baillie, and was admitted as a Burgess of Guild of the City and Royal Burgh of Aberdeen; recognises that Muriel gained a reputation across her ward as someone who would work tirelessly for them, and believes that this commitment to her constituents and to public service helped secure countless improvements for the communities that she represented; notes that Muriel was a member of the Scottish National Party for 69 years, having reportedly joined the party on her 16th birthday, the earliest that she could join the party at the time, and understands that throughout Muriel’s lifetime of campaigning for Scottish independence she went from receiving hostile responses when campaigning in the 1950s and 1960s to leading thousands of independence supporters in a march along Aberdeen’s Union Street in 2019; believes that Muriel has made tremendous contributions to Aberdeen, in particular the Bridge of Don, and to the cause of Scottish independence, and extends its condolences to Muriel’s family and her many friends.
