The Doomsday Clock Reaches 89 Seconds to Midnight

The motion

That the Parliament acknowledges that the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has set its Doomsday Clock to 89 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been; notes that this has moved from three minutes to midnight in 2015 to 89 seconds now due to what the scientists see as the increasing risks posed by nuclear weapons, climate change and artificial intelligence; considers that, as the 80th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki approaches, the threat of nuclear weapon use is at an unprecedented level, exacerbated by a 34% increase in nuclear arsenal spending over the past five years; emphasises what it sees as the importance of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) as a critical diplomatic tool to address this threat; notes that the next meeting of states' parties to the TPNW will be held in New York from 3 to 7 March 2025, and calls on the UK Government to actively engage with the TPNW.
