Cholangiocarcinoma Awareness Month
The motion
That the Parliament recognises that February 2025 was Cholangiocarcinoma Awareness Month, and considers that challenges continue; understands that cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a type of primary liver cancer with an incidence now similar to the more well-known hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), yet is harder to diagnose, cannot be screened for and is affecting increasing numbers of otherwise healthy adults in Scotland, with the cause of this rise being unknown; supports the #FacesOfCholangiocarcinoma campaign, photographed by the Scottish photographer known as Rankin, to raise awareness of CCA; celebrates the work of NHS staff at CCA centres across Scotland; calls for better patient access to psychologists, dietitians and palliative care; understands that, while CCA currently has one of the worst survival rates of all cancers in the UK, the management of this cancer is being transformed by new life-extending therapies; encourages the Scottish Government to address a reported ongoing treatment disparity between Scotland and England, caused by a reported continuing lack of NHS Scotland funding for molecular testing necessary for CCA patients to access all Scottish Medicines Consortium-approved therapies now available, and looks forward to the event at the Scottish Parliament in June 2025 with AMMF, the UK’s only charity dedicated to CCA.
